The VC-1 codec was chosen because it delivers the best looking pictures available in HD DVD. Digital Video Essentials DVD and Digital Video Essentials HD. DVE HD is a HD-DVD version of the standard definition DVE set-up DVD; it was released as a combo DVD/HD-DVD disc by Joe Kane Productions. I searched and found this.
It had links that lead here.
Are these what you were talking about? If so, do we just burn these to a DVD?
Thanks,

Thanks Doug! Yup the second link was exactly the one I was looking for. It's a goldmine of HD test patterns that you can load up onto an HD-A1. All you need to do is burn it into a DVD.

I would have never known what to look for had you not posted here and in Gremmy's thread.
From some other reading I have done in the meantime, I wonder how much longer before the HD-DVD DVE comes out. I read that it might be the end of October..
Thanks again. And, of course, a big thanks to dr1394.
Now I will be able to burn a disk and be ready test the Pearl when it gets in.
Best Regards,
Doug

Do you put one file per DVD or can you do multiple?
Any trick to get it work on toshiba HD-XA1?
They can be used from an HTPC.
There is an .iso file out there that is ready to be burned. Maybe it can be set up on a file sharing website or maybe Ron will host it, as he has offered.
More to come.

Ditto for public domain HD elements like trailers, etc. Was there ever a public release for the Toshiba demo disc with the Kong trailer?
Hey, feel free to PM if you have a line on something legit...
I did this a while back. Maybe this was the thread in question?

Yes, Robert, You are the Man!
Only thing is that quicksharing link does not work for me. I am not sure if it is because the file had not been downloaded for more than thirty days or if it is just something else.
Thanks for making the .iso file. I would love to be able to download it.
Best Regards,
Doug
If someone else gets done before me, hopefully they can share the .iso. I don't know how to host files, but if someone posts instructions after I finish, I will do that as well.
Thanks everyone for the files and the idea.

the reason i ask is that the file size is only ~671mb.

Fanstastic that you put this together, doc, cheers again...
Once again I'm a bit out of my depth with some of these tests (despite being fairly confident with Avia and DVE) - the first pattern for example at 1080i causes havoc with my RPTV The top line (Alternative 1px) is strobbing like mad, while the third line (3px) is also blinking away. 2 and 4 are solid.
Sending a 720p signal displays a rock solid image, if a bit more 'mushy'.
The 1px Full Field screen is a blink fest ready to induce seizure, but the 2px looks perfect.
Ah, technology... always something new to play with...
Any crazy service settings I should tweak to get deinterlacing working on the DVI input for those pixel setups, or is this just a limitation of the Display tech?
Plus (because I'm greedy) would still love someone to put together a nice trailer demo disc for us all to nerd out with our players... Any convenient way of burning QT 1080p files to HD-DVD ISO that you've found? I've seen lots of conversion from .TS files, etc., but nothing obvious to go from trailer to home disc...

thanks..... I'll try it when I get home.
Search the threads for DVE to see the latest...
Yes - don't forget that Digital Video Essentials Pro is about to be released on HD DVD (Yay!)

$350 for the Pro version!?! Somebody needs to tell Joe to wear less suits
should this be burned to a cd-r or dvd-r?

DVD-R or DVD+R should work. I don't think anyone has tried a CD-R.
Ron
excellent, thanks for the new ISO! (should save you on hosting charges as well, I still recommend a (legit) torrent file...)

I'm not a big fan of torrents, and hosting costs are not very high for me. Plus, the file will not go away unless I take it off myself.
The vertical resolution tests are more for flat panels that do deinterlacing. On CRT displays, the flicker is normal.

Excellent - honestly, it's a priceless thing, I'm a photoshop pro, but I wouldn't begin to learn the math involved in doing the test patterns correctly... Heck, I don't even know how y/c delay works, let alone how to draw a pattern...
Again, kudos for the post as ISO, your next step of course is to write a FAQ and then start a paypal account so that we can make you rich...

Ron,
First, thanks very much for the test disk. Very nice indeed. A question if I may. In the motion tests, what exactly are we looking for? As the bar rotates, I see artifacts of it lagging behind the rotation by about 20-45 degrees. Is this expected or is it deinterlacer misbehavior.

I also want to give credit to RAFABAMAD (Robert). He did the nice text intros and compiled the disc.
As for the deinterlacing tests, the thing to watch for are any changes in the top vertical resolution strip. It should remain constant. If it flickers sometimes, then the deinterlacer could be better. The long thread that motivated me to create these deinterlacing patterns is here:

I tried burinig to a DVD+R on my laptop with Roxio, and the XA1 would not play it.. It did not see it as a disk. I tried to burn it to a CD-R, and the Hd-DVD player gave me a 'Not Play' message.
I tired to burn it with my old HTPC to a DVD-R, with Nero 6, and it told me that the DVD-R was the wrong kind of disk, spit it out, and asked for a CD-R. That one gave me an erro number.
I fianlly broke down and played the crosshatch.ts and some of the other files on my HiPix to the computer input ( 'Input A' ) on teh pearl at 1080i.
It worked OK, but I was wanting to do tests with HDMI.
Any suggestions? I am sure it is something simple that I am missing, but I simply don't know what it is.
Best Regards,
Doug
